What are your main responsibilities or activities in your current position?

As a hardware research scientist in a mass spectrometry company, my major role is planning, organizing and executing independent research including conception, theoretical and computational modeling, and the implementation and experimental evaluation of new and improved mass spectrometry systems.

 

How does your current work relate to your graduate degree?

My current role is designing new analytical platforms, which is similar to what I did during my graduate study. In addition to the scientific knowledge I have gained from being a graduate student,my experience managing projects and working with collaborators has been helpful for my current work.

What motivated you to pursue graduate work at UBC?

UBC has the top graduate program in chemistry, and my PhD advisor, Prof. David Chen is not only an extraordinary scientist, but also a great mentor for my career.

What key things did you do, or what attitudes or approaches did you have, that contributed to your success?

My ongoing scientific curiosity.

What is your best piece of advice for current graduate students preparing for their future careers?

Don't be afraid to fail. More can be learned if you figured out why something didn't work the first time around.
